Surface water monitoring

The surface water sampling strategy will comprise:

  - Weekly grab samples for ground truthing sensors
  - Flow proportional sampling to capture storm based events
  - Additional background/baseflow sampling to capture pollution
    inputs from distributed sources with a low rainfall-dependency
  - Additional samples to develop site-specific turbidity/SSC ratings
  - Targeted flow measurements to develop flow ratings
 
There are a total of seven surface water monitoring sites on the Hampshire Avon and four on the Tamar.  On the Hampshire Avon four sites have autosampler monitoring stations and two sites have high spec monitoring stations.  On the Tamar three sites have autosampler monitoring stations.  Please see below for more details.
 

Autosampler stations:
 

The Hampshire Avon autosampler stations are situated at:

  1.  Kingston Deverill on the River Wylye
  2.  Priors Farm on the River Sem
  3.  Cools Cottage on the River Sem 
  4.  Ebbesbourne Wake on the River Ebble

The Tamar autosampler stations are situated at:

  1. Caudworthy Outlet on Caudworthy Water
  2. Winnacott Bridge on Caudworthy Water
  3. Burracott Bridge on the River Neet

N.B The Tamar autosampler stations also have a YSI multi-parameter sonde (see High Spec Stations for details)

 

The autosampler monitoring stations are:

  -
Collecting water samples for phosphorus and nitrogen
     species analysis and suspended sediment

  -  Measuring turbidity

  -  M
easuring Dissolved Oxygen (DO)


  -  Measuring water level

  -  Measuring flow rate using a fixed section in the channel


High Spec Stations:

 

The Hampshire Avon high spec monitoring stations are situated at:

  1.  Brixton Deverill on the River Wyle
  2.  Ebbesbourne Wake on the River Ebble

 

These monitoring stations are:

  - Collecting water samples to analyse phosphorus and
     nitrogen forms and suspended sediment

  - Measuring phosphorus and orthophosphate concentrations

  -
Measuring nitrate and ammonium concentrations

  -
Using a YSI multi-parameter sonde to measure DO, pH,
    temperature, conductivity, turbidity, blue green algae,
    chlorophyll a

  - Measuring water level

  - Measuring flow rate using a
fixed section in the channel

  - Using a LISST particle size analyser (used intermittently amongst wider deployment in the target sub-catchments and wider Avon DTC)
