Ian is co-supervising Matilda Biddulph in her PhD on 'Assessing the efficacy of mitigation options for diffuse water pollution from agriculture'.

For more than 30 years Ian has worked on issues of water quality, erosion, land degradation and reservoir sedimentation in many parts of the world including the UK, circum-Mediterranean area, the Middle East and South Africa. He has expertise in sediment source tracing and in reconstructing the history of erosion from sediments accumulating in reservoirs. At Northampton University he runs gamma spectrometry, environmental magnetism and particle size laboratories. He has published over 120 scientific papers in international peer reviewed journals and currently supervises PhD students working on topics including sediment quality issues in the River Ravensbourne (London) sediment pressures in the River Nene, sediment-associated radioactivity in UK catchments and climate resilience in Jordan.
