Moragh Stirling

Moragh is working on a PhD project in conjunction with the Hampshire Avon DTC project, based at Reading University.

The title of her PhD is: 'Stream Ecosystem Functional Responses to Catchment Mitigation Measures in the Hampshire Avon DTC'.

This project will investigate the metabolic response of the river community to mitigation strategies. It will concentrate on the base of the trophic web and its influence on the availability of nutrients to downstream reaches and to the higher trophic groups that are more often used to characterise ecological status.

Main Aims:
1- Assess rates of macronutrient cycling and exchange between atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic pools for nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon in four contrasting stream reaches;
2- Determine in-stream rates of C, N and P assimilation, sequestration and release;
3- Construct a C, N and P budget for each reach, based on these data, to run pre-, during, and post manipulation.
